Establishment of cross-border Specially Protected nature territory: First meeting in Belarus

The first meeting of Project "Cross-border Nature" (LLB-2-258) was held in Braslav, territory of national park „Braslavskije ozjora” („Braslav lakes”), Belarus, at 4th and 5th of November, 2013.   The goal of Project is establishment of cross-border Specially Protected nature territory in border area of Latvia and Belarus, based on existing protected areas – Protected landscape area „Augšdaugava” in Latvia, and national park „Braslavskije ozjora” in Belarus. Therefore the main activities of Project are aimed to estimating of nature values and nature conservation issues as well as harmonising of management and governance principles of both protected areas.
The representatives of Project partners - Nature Conservation Agency (Latvia), State Scientific and Production Amalgamation "The Scientific and Practical Center for Bioresources” (Belarus), national park “Braslavskije ozjora” (Belarus), and Daugavpils County Council took part in kick-off meeting. The working group on establishment of cross-border Specially Protected nature territory „Augšdaugava-Braslavskije ozjora” includes representatives of Project Associated partners – Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, Director of Nature Conservation Department Daiga Vilkaste (Latvia), Ministry of Nature Resources and Environmental Protection, Biological and Landscape Board, Consultant of Land and Landscape division Tatjana Trafimovich (Belarus), as well as Department of Presidential Management of the Republic of Belarus, Head of Nature complexes and Industrial production division Vasilij Kozlov.
The Project partners agreed on details of implementing for  main Project actions as well as discussed the future perspectives of cross-border territory „Augšdaugava-Braslavskije ozjora”, among them including this area in the network of Ramsar Convention and UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Project actions will serve as background for sustainable development of Specially protected nature territories in border area, conservation of biodiversity as well as for future cooperation among institutions of both countries and public involvement in order to ensure good neighbourly relations between Latvia and Belarus.

Project is implemented  in the framework of Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus Cross-border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013. within the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument.
